What is Accutane?

Accutane is the original brand name for isotretinoin, one of the most effective prescription medications available for severe or persistent acne. Although the brand name Accutane is no longer manufactured, many people still use "Accutane" to refer to isotretinoin treatment. Today, patients receive FDA-approved generic isotretinoin or equivalent branded formulations such as Claravis, Amnesteem, Myorisan, Absorica, and Zenatane. All contain the same active ingredient and are selected based on your medical needs, insurance coverage, and pharmacy availability.

Important Safety and Regulation Information

Isotretinoin is a serious prescription medication and is not appropriate for everyone.

The information on this page is educational and does not constitute medical advice, a diagnosis, or a guarantee of eligibility for treatment. All treatment decisions — including whether isotretinoin is appropriate for you, your starting dose, dosing schedule, and duration of therapy — are made solely by a licensed, independent healthcare provider based on an individualized medical evaluation, your history, and applicable lab results.

Treatment Timelines Vary

Course length depends on your dosing regimen, cumulative dose targets, and individual response, and is determined by your provider — it is not fixed in advance. Standard-dose regimens are commonly completed in roughly 4–6 months; some patients require longer courses or a second course of treatment. Results and timelines vary by individual, and clearer skin is not guaranteed for every patient.

Who Should Not Take Isotretinoin.

Isotretinoin causes severe, life-threatening birth defects if taken during pregnancy. It is not safe for anyone who is pregnant or may become pregnant during treatment. It may also not be appropriate for patients with certain liver conditions, significantly elevated blood lipids, a history of depression or other mental health conditions that are not well-controlled, known hypersensitivity to isotretinoin or its components, or other conditions identified during your consultation. A complete medical history is required before treatment can begin.

What the Membership Includes — and Doesn't

The $59/month membership fee covers access to dermatology visits, treatment monitoring, prescription management, iPLEDGE support, and messaging with your care team. It does not include the cost of medication, laboratory testing, or any other services, which are billed separately and may be covered in whole or in part by insurance. Coverage and out-of-pocket costs depend on your individual insurance plan; we do not guarantee coverage or a specific cost for medication or labs.

iPLEDGE Enrollment Is Mandatory

Federal law requires every patient prescribed isotretinoin — regardless of sex or reproductive capacity — to be enrolled in the iPLEDGE Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) program. Patients who can become pregnant must use two forms of effective contraception (or commit to abstinence) and complete monthly pregnancy testing for the duration of treatment and for a defined period afterward. Prescriptions cannot be released outside of iPLEDGE requirements, and delays in lab work, contraception compliance, or monthly check-ins can result in a delayed or withheld prescription. This is a federal requirement, not a policy of our practice.

Licensing & Availability

Care is provided by licensed healthcare providers practicing within their state of licensure. Availability of this service, and of specific providers, may be limited by state and is subject to applicable telehealth laws. This service is not intended for use in a medical emergency; if you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Possible Side Effects

Isotretinoin commonly causes dry skin, lips, eyes, and nasal passages, and increased sun sensitivity. Less common but medically significant effects can include changes in mood, elevated liver enzymes or blood lipids, night vision changes, joint or muscle discomfort, and rare associations with inflammatory bowel disease. Your provider will review the full risk profile with you, order appropriate baseline and follow-up labs, and monitor you for these effects throughout treatment. Contact your provider or seek emergency care immediately if you experience new or worsening depression, suicidal thoughts, severe abdominal pain, or vision changes while on this medication.
