Can You Get Skin Cancer If You Never Burn?

Many people assume skin cancer only affects individuals who experience frequent sunburns. Unfortunately, this is a common misconception.

While sunburns significantly increase risk, cumulative UV exposure also contributes to skin cancer development.

Even individuals who tan easily, wear sunscreen regularly, or rarely burn can develop skin cancer.

Risk factors include:

  • Genetics

  • Fair skin

  • History of tanning bed use

  • Chronic sun exposure

  • Weakened immune system

Skin cancer can appear anywhere on the body, including areas not regularly exposed to the sun.

Regular skin exams remain essential regardless of your skin type or sunburn history.

At OSVI Dermatology, we encourage all patients to prioritize prevention, sun protection, and routine skin checks.
