The ABCDEs of Melanoma Every Patient Should Know

Melanoma is one of the most serious forms of skin cancer. Recognizing warning signs early can significantly improve outcomes.

Dermatologists use the ABCDE rule to evaluate suspicious moles:

A – Asymmetry

One half doesn't match the other.

B – Border

Edges appear irregular, jagged, or blurred.

C – Color

Multiple colors or uneven pigmentation are present.

D – Diameter

Larger than 6 millimeters, though melanomas can be smaller.

E – Evolving

Changes in size, shape, color, or symptoms.

Any mole that looks different from others or changes over time should be evaluated.

Regular self-exams combined with professional skin checks are among the best ways to detect melanoma early.

At OSVI Dermatology, we help patients monitor their skin and identify concerning lesions before they become more serious.
